### AndrewOuthwaite.com - innovation, coaching, consciousness and community
https://andrewouthwaite.com/
117 articles from 2008 to 2020 that reflect my scientific mindset, interest in human development, passion for entrepreneurial solutions, and care for the health of whole systems. These were published across multiple sites (wearearising.org primarily) before being compiled in one.
The major categories of articles are:
#### Innovation Incubation
Since 2008 I’ve been learning and sharing about how to incubate innovations. This work has included running and designing incubators, facilitating accelerator programs, presenting at conferences, multiple international study tours, advocating on behalf of them, and being engaged by local, regional, state and federal governments as an expert to author strategies or make recommendations on investing in incubators.
You can read a selection of articles on this topic – [_**HERE**_](https://andrewouthwaite.com/tag/innovation-incubation/) – including on:
- what’s a good incubator, and how to measure it?
- what is an ‘incubation facilitator’ and why is that a different skill than ‘running an incubator’?
- what characterises healthy innovation ecosystems, and how do they differ geographically?
- how can local government grow innovation for local economic, social and environmental benefit?
- what is unique and important to know about innovation in regional areas?
#### Coaching for Sustainability
My interest and training in facilitation and leadership development has paralleled my passion for the ocean and environmental sustainability since the early 1990s. I’ve worked as a corporate coach, community facilitator and have qualifications in multiple individual, team and organisational development approaches including: Leadership Development Framework (Harthill), PRINT (Paul Hertz group) and Holacracy.
In 2008 I published a report based on research into the role of coaching in enabling organisations to make progress towards ecological and social sustainability outcomes and subsequently presented the findings at conferences and applied it in my coaching work. I continue to apply and evolve my learning in work with individuals, teams and large multi-stakeholder initiatives.
You can read a selection of blogs – _**[HERE](https://andrewouthwaite.com/tag/coaching-for-sustainability/)**_ – including on:
- different ‘territories’ for developing as a leader,
- the merits of innovation competitions and art exhibitions to catalyse social change,
- summaries of the published research on coaching for sustainability,
- introductions to frameworks and tools, such as holacracy, leadership development framework and integral theory,
- specific skills like feeling deeper, listening differently, being purposeless, or paying attention to transitions,
- the significance of one’s identity for sustainability.
#### Cheng Hsin consciousness and body being
For seven years I was fortunate enough to spend time learning from Peter Ralston and the Cheng Hsin community. I travelled internationally to completed every type of retreat offered, studied diligently to completed every course available and read every book published on the martial and consciousness aspects of the work. In 2017 I spent the majority of the year multi-week or multi-month retreats and meditation and experienced some significant breakthroughs into the nature of self, others, and existence.
I became one amongst the small global network of Cheng Hsin consciousness facilitators and facilitated several 3-month “Increasing Consciousness Groups”, weekend “Empowering Consciousness Workshop” and hosting longer, ten-day ‘Experiencing the Nature of Being’ retreats, some ongoing martial training groups, and other workshops and training.
You can read more about my experience of and insights from Cheng Hsin – _**[HERE](https://andrewouthwaite.com/tag/cheng-hsin/)**_ – including:
- what is Cheng Hsin? what are the key resources to learn about it?
- why is learning to fight effectively is complementary to meditation for increasing consciousness,
- what an experience of these workshops and retreats is like, and what to expect in attending
- what are key principles of the work, and what insights and difference do they make in practice.
### Swim 541 - 541km of swimming for Type 1 Diabetes charities
https://swim541.substack.com/
8 posts from late 2020 and early 2021 documenting 541km of swimming and fundraising...
I’ve always loved the ocean, but have far from it for on periods while in Sweden, London and Canada and pursued other movement practices such as mountain biking, martial arts or rock climbing. In 2020 during the COVID lockdown I found myself living very close to the ocean and with every reason to spend more time in it.
One day gazing across to Rottnest, and with inspiration from a few amazing people, I decided to focus on the ocean, swimming and swim to Rottnest while raising money for a very worthy cause – Type 1 Diabetes. Over the course of training I swam 541 kilometres and ultimately achieved my goal of swimming to Rottnest, solo, and raising more than $5410.
Topics include:
- reaching one’s limits and going beyond them,
- metrics that matter for ocean swimmers, and those with type 1 diabetes,
- drugs and nutrition for swimmers, and people with type 1,
- how the swim went on the day of the final 20km crossing to Rotto!
### Resilient Koans - creating resilient, sustainable communities
http://resilient-koans.blogspot.com
25 posts from 2010, documenting an "apithologue" with [Will Varey](https://www.willvarey.com/) into the koans of practice discovered while creating resilient sustainable communities. Examples of koans include:
- "What is not said in what is said in theories of tipping points, leverage points and systems change",
- "How can you hold a neutral space for a process without expectations and sustain the direction and intention for specific and contributive outcomes?"
- "If most serious things are 'weighty', is it appropriate to hold them lightly?"
### FlowingMu - low-carbon travel across Europe, Asia and Australia
https://flowingmu.wordpress.com
This blog is primarily 105 blog posts in late 2008, early 2009 documenting my overland trip from the London, UK back to Geraldton, Australia. I traveled overland (rail, road and some ferries) for more than 3 months, but also had to make two 1500km flights. The title ‘Descending’ refers to the journeys from north to south, from high-carbon to low-carbon lifestyles and from superficial to deeper engagement with global issues and cultures.
The posts address my experiences, carbon footprint, ratings of different modes of transport and the logistics of overland travel, equipment and preparation and a sustainability festival I co-organised towards the end of the trip that travelled from Sydney to Melbourne.
The same site also hosts earlier posts unrelated to that trip
- 2 posts about 2003 cycling trip from Adelaide to Melbourne, then on to Tasmania
- 69 posts from 2006 to 2007 of reflections on travelling through eastern and northern Europe (by train, foot and bicycle), living and studying in Sweden, and living and working in London before departing in 2008.
